In recent years, the accidents which have occurred frequently in coal enterprises become an unbearable thorny problem for building Harmonious Society, so raising the technological level of Coal Mine Safety Monitoring System (CMSMS) is an urgent affairs. Wireless sensor networks (WSN), as a new field of research, has a broad application prospect. The thesis introduces a design scheme about CMSMS, which takes full advantage of wireless sensor networks, combines CAN bus communication technique, so that whole orientation, real time monitoring and intelligent prediction of various environmental and operation parameters can be realized as to effectively avoid possible disasters caused by the gas, fire and so on.In the preliminary stage of the scheme planning, the thesis analyzes CMSMS in domestic and abroad, various safety monitoring system being analyzed, the feasibility and superiority of WSN are proved to be preferable in coal mines. ZigBee technique is chosen as the communication platform of WSN by comparing the features of various wireless communications technology used in coal mines. In view of the particular circumstances in coal mines tunnels, the thesis focus on the electromagnetic environment and the frequency of electromagnetic wave propagation characteristics in the tunnels. 915MHz is chosen as the frequency of ZigBee by reference to a large number of successful applications of domestic and foreign schemes. In this thesis, the software and hardware design of communications platform for CMSMS has been accomplished, which based on IP-Link1221-2033 RF modules and C8051Fxx MCU. Some ideas on low-power design are presented. Finally, a great deal of valuable data, such as communication distance and antenna radiation range and so on, has been obtained by a lot of experiments, and a number of suggestions about some problems in hardware assembling, coding and debugging have been raised. Above all, the feasibility of the system design and its satisfying stability and expandability has been confirmed.
