While China is a coal power in the world, mining accidents occur quite frequently. As far as mine safety is concerned, the gas concentration is a very important indicator, for which, it is very essential to know timely the concentration of gas and the temperature and humidity and other environmental information in the mine so as to ensure the safety of mine working environment.The other hand, most of the current Mine Safety Monitoring Systems exploit wiring cables to transmit signals. It is too complicated to distribute cables, its dependence is also strong for the line and the costs installation and maintenance of equipment are higher. When mine accidents take place, equipment and cables are often damaged and consequently can't provide useful information for the rescue work afterwards.On the basis of the great incidence of gas accidents in the coal mine, the paper probes into how to design a new short-range wireless sensor network to monitor the temperature and methane gas concentration, and carbon monoxide gas concentration in the coal mine, as well as hardware and software design and implementation. Hardware design involves the design of collection terminal joints, gas sensor application circuit, temperature and humidity sensors, and carbon monoxide sensor application circuit. Software design involves collecting temperature and the concentration of methane gas, carbon monoxide gas concentrations, networking and communication between nodes and so on. In addition, by using Chengdu wireless sensor development systems, we successfully design the wireless communication networks based on IEEE802.15.4 and ZigBee, meanwhile carry out the experiment and data analysis on the wireless sensor networks.The design makes an exploatory attempt at applying the short-range wireless sensor network into the production of coal mine and basically achieves the purpose of collecting and transmiting temperature and other environmental information in the coal mine. The design can act as a valuable referance to developing and applying safety information monitoring technology in the coal mine.
