Accompany with the rapid development of computer network, the network architecture is increasingly complicated, the scale of network extends continuously. Therefore, the functions and positions of the network management are also more and more important. The operation of traditional system is limited by the location of management station as well as the system platform, which gives it poor performance to the complicated network. Nowadays, the trend of network management is integrated, intelligent, real-time and distributed. Especially with the development of Web technology is Web-based network management.The objective of this thesis is to discuss the application of Web technology on Network Management and to seek solutions for Web-based network management system (NMS). WBM has many advantages, such as distributed, cross-platform, easy to operate, platform independent, easy to maintain, etc. Administrators can both monitor and control the net through any web browser in any site with WBM, it can also solve many interoperable problems as operating on multi-platform structure. This thesis first discusses the fundamentality of Network Management System, analyses the existing network management software and network direction. Then it introduces the elementary theory and the core technology of the SNMP, covering the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Structure of Management Information (SMI), Management Information Base (MIB), etc, following is the technology of Web-based network management system from background, strategy and standards.At last it discusses the realization of the system in detail, including system design principles, division of system function and its architecture. Realization of the system is based on agent technology, which is a full use of existing network resources. It mainly realizes two main functional modules-a model of configuration and a model of performance. The contribution of this thesis is its putting forward a solution that can be used in model design for Web-based NMS, we can control the resource of network efficaciously. Finally, it introduces the system with illustration.
