As the higher speed development of the network technology, the larger scale of the network, the more increasing application of the network, it is becoming a huge task and an difficult problem for the network managers how to design and build a network management system adapting to one's own local network. This paper and our continuing study are properly based on the requirement and the characteristic about such applications.Firstly, the paper provides the architecture and the development of the network management system, including the concept, the elements and the functions of the network management system. At the same time, the paper analyses the network management protocol and describes the principle and its development of the simple network management protocol in detail.Secondly, the paper describes the architecture design of the network management system in detail, including analyzing the architecture and technologies of the managed network, the base of the system architecture design, and so on. And it gives the network management system architecture on the basis of comparing some network management platforms and technologies.Finally, the paper shows the function realization of the network management system, including the configuration management, the fault management, the performance management and the user management. And some planning functions in the future are discussed at last.
