OPGW who has both Communication Function and transmission line lightning function is used widely in the electric power communication network. OPGW has many merits, but there is still some questions on the operation, and icing is one of the questions. The question of ice-coating transmission line have been learnt, and got a lot of useful experience and research results. However, OPGW who is used as ground wire has its own property, so the method of research can use for reference and the results can not be copied. Especially, the changes of heavy ice-coating OPGW performance need to be analyzed exactly. In this paper, the emulator is carried out which the method of catenary equation is simulated as the ice-coating OPGW, and the change of mechanical performance is analyzed. Firstly, the change of mechanical performance of OPGW has been learnt in heavy ice-coating. Secondly, the change of mechanical performance of OPGW influenced by wind and temperature is learnt. Thirdly, under the mechanical performance, the changes of electric performance and transmission performance and the hidden trouble have been learnt. The analysis results indicated that the high ice-coating have a large influence on the mechanical performance, and the structural parameters, initial sag and tension and spans of OPGW also have a great influence on the mechanical performance and transmission performance of ice-coating OPGW, but the influence of electric performance is very small. On the basis of the characteristics of weather conditions, temperature and wind have a little influence on the ice-coating OPGW. The results have certain significance on the design and installation of OPGW in the area of heavy ice-coating in the future.
