In the early 21st century, when newspapers were still dominant in the press,Daniel C.Hallin and Paolo Mancini studied media institutions in the US,Canada, and most countries in the western Europe based on a "most similar systems" design and four dimensions,including(1)the development of media markets;(2)political parallelism;(3)the development of journalistic professionalism;and(4)the degree and nature of state intervention in the media system. And the two scholars finally put forward three models of media and politics:(1)the Mediterranean or Polarized Pluralist Model,(2)the North/Central European or Democratic Corporatist Model,and(3)the North Atlantic or Liberal Model.Information delivery channels are enriched with technology development, and multi-media websites now surpass newspapers to become a dominant power in the world stage.Since that, are the three models still applicable nowadays? And to what extent are they still matched up with present situation? Therefore, this thesis tests the three models in the case of text reports on the incident that Turkey shot down Russian Su-24 in the media of the US,Russia, and Turkey.According to the result of Hallin and Mancini's previous study, the US media institution belonged to the North Atlantic or Liberal Model, then this paper examines if US media still remains on this way.And as for Russia and Turkey, which have not been studied by Hallin and Mancini, their media are tested with a reference to the three models and US media development and on the basis of the four dimensions.By analyzing publication date and number of reports, news sources, topic choosing, key words, and writing style, the paper explores the relationship between media institution and politics in Russia and Turkey. The thesis uses content analysis to study text reports on the incident of Turkey shooting down Russian warplane in CNN,Russia Today, and Anadolu Agency, and all samples are available freely on the English-language website of the three media. And quantitative analysis with the help of SPSS and qualitative analysis by employing AntConc have been used. The result found that all the media reports are almost consistent with its government's agenda for this international issue,no matter the media have a strong government background or not.For CNN based in the US with liberal model, whether the phenomena demonstrate a particular case only for international issues or countertendency of liberal model needs further study. And Russia Today and Anadolu Agency, which both have government background, have differences in political parallelism, journalistic professionalism and proportion of government sources, while Russia Today spreading its influence quickly across the world and even in the United States and CNN with commercial orientation share more common features.Despite different government themes and perspectives for Russia Today and CNN separately, they both like to apply journalistic professionalism to their reports, attracting a large readership.Actually,Russia Today has a better performance in using multi-media and social media.
