Informatization construction in universities has being increasingly booming in recent years. Higher informatization requirements have been presented by various departments in terms of site construction, teaching, management, research, and even everyday life, which indicates the growth of administrators' information-based consciousness, as well as the constant direction of social change. For a long time, informatization construction is passively driven by the business. Due to the poor correlations between business systems, it is difficult to build a unified standard and structure. In addition, a lack of consistent standard and related planning in data center construction leads to various issues, such as low utilization, complicated management, poor scalability of IT resources, data islands formed from hardware platforms, difficulty in sharing and deployment and overloading the management staff with emergency situations. However, it has been gradually possible to solve virtually all the problems mentioned before since the emergence of virtualization. Building virtualization, a huge IT resource pool, brings advantages such as reduction in overall IT costs, energy consumption and enhancement of the application system stability, etc.Engaged in the virtualization application and management for decades, the author designed a set of applicable data center construction methodologies and experiences for real circumstances utilizing VMware server virtualization technology. By applying the methodologies and the laboratory management system based on Cloud Computing in a university, superiority and efficiency of virtualization was revealed. For example, systems that need multiple hardware resources formerly were integrated, planned and reallocated, which improved resource utilization, eliminated planned downtime(e.g. firmware updating, board card replacing and hardware upgrading), reduced unplanned downtime(e.g. hardware failure and power failure) and even avoided the adverse effect to IT systems to some extent. As a result, the data center was improved in terms of the reliability, environmental protection, scalability and maintenance convenience, which lays a solid foundation for universities informatization construction.
