Research Of The Renovation Techniques Of The Traditional Village Houses In Chongqing

Traditional village houses inherited the essence of human material and non-material culture.They are one of the important cultural objects that need urgent repair and preservation.During the process of integration of urban and rural development,the village settlements in Chongqing are now in rapid renovation.Due to the ignorance of the historical and cultural value of these village houses and the absent of legal regulations,many architecture didn’t get in-time renovation,and even were demolished arbitrarily.A great number of village houses are in great danger.In addition,the ancient architect renovation teams in Chongqing are fewer and fewer,which is another threat to the renovation and protection of traditional village houses.Up to now,Longtan Town in Youyang county in Chongqing(hereinafter referred to as Longtan Tonw)has a history of more than 2200 years.The ancient domestic architectures in the town are rare historical heritage.After my on-the-spot investigation of the traditional domestic architectures in Longtan Town,I wonder: how to renovate these ancient and traditional architectures and what techniques and materials to use? How to gain economic profits and keep the original looks at the same time,and make it reusable,continuable,evolvable? The renovation techniques are well used in the renovation of some large courtyard with historical and cultural value,but not in the renovation of ordinary domestic houses.However the domestic dwellings take up a large part of the traditional village houses.Therefore,the renovation is not only government’s responsibility,but also the proprietors’ obligation.And the renovation techniques of some common key parts is especially important for the proprietors.These issues are worthy of our in-depth discussion.Only with a comprehensive and systematicimprovement of the renovation techniques and strategies,could we realize the revival and effective implementation of the traditional village house renovation.This research is based on the field-researches of Hong village,Likeng,Shaxi,Huang village and Shangxiakeng.And the paper could not be done without a number of on-spot-research in Longtan town.The research methods are mainly literature review,theoretical analyses,induction and a great deal of analyses of the records of field investigations.Focused on the renovation techniques of traditional village houses in Chongqing,this paper starts with present situation of the renovation techniques and the purpose and meaning of the research.Combining the analyses of related concepts,principles and values with the specific case study of Longtan town,we found some problems like: the renovation techniques are ill-conditioned and rough and the process is disordered.Through the analyses of these problems,we put forward strategies to improve the renovation techniques.For the specific strategies,they are studied on three stages,i.e.pre-renovation,in-renovation and after-renovation.In the last part,under the premise of the improvement of renovation techniques through specific cases,we furthered our thinking: different from larger courtyards with great historical and cultural values,the domestic dwellings have residential characteristics.If the proprietors have a good knowledge of some basic key renovation techniques,the traditional folk houses could get better protection and inheritance.The inheritance of the renovation techniques of traditional village houses is not the responsibility of the government.It need efforts from the proprietors and design teams.Hopefully,this paper can serves as a reference for the government,the residents,the design and construction teams.
