There has been an obvious development trend in communication networks that service networksshowing IP-central characteristics and bearer network being packet-oriented. It has being focusedgreat concern for telecom operators to make packet-based services be transported and beared inmore efficient ways. Packet Transport Network (PTN) is a packet-oriented optical transporttechnology which provides a good solution for efficiently transporting carrier’s grade IP services. Ithas been widely accepted as one of the best candidate technologies for metropolitan transportnetwork. This thesis presents a comprehensive and in depth study on PTN technology and itsplanning and application in metropolitan transport networks. Some key technologies of PTN arestudied in detail along with the actual PTN planning project in Yangzhou Mobile.This thesis firstly introduces the development history, fundamental principles, systemarchitecture and equipment forms of PTN, respectively. Some key technologies of PTN are studiedin detail including synchronization、protection mechanisms and OAM. By analyzing the network ofYZMCC and investigation into data load demand, a three-year rolling planning for YZMCC PTN isdesigned. In order to solve the problems of YZMCC PTN, include big ring, long chain and lack offiber resource, a network optimization into PTN have been carried out. By this optimization, therate of site in ring rised up to95%.
