There has been an obvious development trend in communication networks that service networks showing IP-central characteristics and bearer network being packet-oriented. It has being focused great concern for telecom operators to make packet-based services be transported and beared in more efficient ways. Packet Transport Network (PTN) is a packet-oriented optical transport technology which provides a good solution for efficiently transporting carrier's grade IP services. It has been widely accepted as one of the best candidate technologies for metropolitan transport network. This thesis presents a comprehensive and in depth study on PTN technology and its planning and application in metropolitan transport networks. Some key technologies of PTN are studied in detail along with the actual PTN planning project in Nanjing Mobile. This thesis firstly introduces the development history, fundamental principles, system architecture and equipment forms of PTN, respectively. The some key technologies of PTN are studied in detail including synchronization, protection mechanisms and OAM. The PTN synchronization methods, accuracy and implementation mechanism are proposed. Different PTN protection technologies are introduced with the corresponding protocol interactive scenarios. Both the fault and performance management issues in PTN OAM technology are presented. On this basis, this thesis presents the analysis of PTN network positioning, network planning technologies and deployment strategy. Some proposal strategies of PTN network planning are obtained. Finally, according to the actual PTN project in Nanjing Mobile, a specific PTN network planning and deployment schemes are presented.
