Reality TV, originated in the West, has become one of the most popular categories oftelevision programs. In the late1990s, having been introduced into China, Reality TV, is inthe journey of exploration and development of “Localization”. The process of localization isfrom theoretical cognition to practical imitation of existing patterns based on China’s specificconditions. At the primary stage, our TV practitioners adopted some elements of Reality TVaccidently, or plagiarized others’ achievements inappropriately. Gradually, encountered withthe problems of acclimatization, practitioners started to be apprehensive of the significance oftransformation and innovation. Our practitioners employ the copyright of overseas Reality TVprograms, and learn the advanced concepts of production of TV programs in the contact withthe excellent foreign groups. In China, up till the present moment, the essence of overallresearch of Reality TV, is how transplant the pattern of Reality TV to our country.In my thesis, take Hunan satellite TV for example, from three aspects of acculturation,practical relevance and innovation, using the case study method, comparative study methodand text analysis method, to analyze the process of localization of Reality TV in Hunan, andsummarize the experience.The thesis is composed of three parts. In the first part, the thesis showed the theoreticalresults of localization of Reality TV in academic research. in the second part, the thesis madea summing up of experience and lessons of development of Reality TV in Hunan, with thedifferences between China and the West from culture and the developmental level of industry.In the last part, the thesis made a conclusion of the localization strategy from three points ofacculturation, practical relevance and innovation.
