China is a country with the largest elderly population in the world, which coversone fifth of the world’s ageing population. China not only has a large population, butalso accounts for the largest proportion of the aged. The aging pace of China is also onthe top of the world. At present, China has21provinces as the representatives of theageing population in the mainland. The ageing population has brought about theprofound influence on China’s economic, social, cultural and other aspects of thedevelopment. With the huge ageing population, the needs for pension, health andmedical care, as well as social service are confronted with higher stress. Accompaniedby the increasing standard of people’s living as well as the deteriorating ageingpopulation today, the significant role of the public library can not be ignored. Publiclibrary is an important part of our country’s library cause, as well as a major place forthe mental activities of the elderly. To serve for the reader is the basic task of the library,and the point where the value of the library lies. However, public library service underthe ageing society problem is an area at a discount. We will look for the problem fromthe factors influencing the service for the aging readers in our national public libraries,and reconsider the issue mentioned above.The purpose of this paper is to examine the current status of the development ofpublic library services for the elderly in China through the method of literatureinvestigation, chart analysis. It will also analyze the factors affecting the elderly readerservice of public libraries in our country, including legal policy, sources of funding,service environment, service content, personnel quality of administrators, etc. Based onthe analysis of existing problems of public library services for the elderly in China, wewill put forward the strategies of our national public library services under thebackground of an ageing society.
