With the fast development of china’s urbanization, public has higher demand forintelligent lighting monitoring technology which can save a lot of manpower andresources. Because the time that we started to pay attention to intelligent lighting monitoringtechnology is later, China’s urban lighting control technology is still relatively backward now,there are also many problems. For example, the current control style of urban lighting ismainly time control or manual control. The current method can’t turn on or off the lights intime, not to reflect running state of the lamps. Besides that, it also has high rate of failure andis difficult to maintain.As an emerging wireless technology, ZigBee technology has merits of low cost, highreliability, short-time delay, large network capacity and widely covered range. These featuresmake ZigBee technology have broad prospects in embedded systems. Its mainly applicablefield is automatic control and remote control. Wireless sensor network (WSN) resolves thetransmission pathways related problems such as difficulties in the cable wiring, datacollecting in the area where the human can’t reach, so that it simplifies the tedious work in thenetwork wiring, interface presetting, rail transit detecting and network capacity expansion etc.Besides that, ZigBee Alliance has defined a set of wireless lighting control specification,which ensures all producers of related products to interoperability, so that ZigBee forintelligent monitoring system used widely promoted can be possible. The wireless sensorterminal employs the Freescale2.4GHz RF-Chip MC13213. MC13213supports the point topoint communication, simple star and mesh networks,Intelligent lighting monitoring system uses three-tier structure of "Monitoring center–main controller unit-signal lamp controller unit". Monitoring center can control the state oflights by GPRS and ZigBee wireless sensor network. Signal lamp controller unit can measuredata of light’s state, including the instant voltage, current and effective power. If maincontroller unit receives data of light’s state from ZigBee network, it will send data to backend server. Monitoring software of monitoring center can realize real-time state of lights byanalysis data of light’s state.This paper realizes an application of ZigBee technique in lighting monitoring. The testresults show that this system is stable and has high potential value for practical application.Although this design is based on the lighting monitoring system, it also offers a valuablereference for design of other similar wireless sensor networks.
