Street lamps and landscape lamps are not only beautiful sight in city’s night, butalso required public lightings in urban. Urban lighting monitoring system integratesfunctions of monitoring and control. An efficient urban lighting monitoring system cansave a lot of manpower and resources. But China’s urban lighting control technology isstill relatively backward now, there are also many problems. For example, the currentcontrol style of urban lighting is mainly time control or manual control. The currentmethod can’t turn on or off the lights in time, not to reflect running state of the lamps.Besides that, it also has high rate of failure and is difficult to maintain.As an emerging wireless technology, ZigBee technology has merits of low cost,high reliability, short-time delay, large network capacity and widely covered range. Thesefeatures make ZigBee technology have broad prospects in embedded systems. Its mainlyapplicable field is automatic control and remote control. In this thesis, detailing thecharacteristics and its application of ZigBee wireless communication technology. Incontrast to other lighting monitoring technologies and wireless communicationtechnologies, adopt ZigBee wireless networking technology to urban lightingmonitorning system.Urban lighting monitorning system uses three-tier structure of "Monitoring center-Road-side communication device-Road-side monitoring instrument of signal lamp".Road-side monitoring instruments and Road-side communication devices can buildZigBee wireless sensor network together. What’s more, Road-side communicationdevices can communicate with central server of monitoring center by GPRS technologyas well. The status of lights can be monitored by using monitoring software andcomputer controlling software of the monitoring center together. This paper mainlypresents hardware design and software design of the Road-side communication device and Road-side monitoring instrument of signal lamp. Besides, design methods of uppercomputer mointoring software are also introduced.This paper realizes an application of ZigBee technique in urban lighting monitoring.The test results show that this system is stable and has high potential value for practicalapplication. Although this design is based on the lighting monitoring system, it alsooffers a valuable reference for design of other similar wireless sensor networks.
