With the rapid development of network technology, remote monitoring system is applied in various fields. Through the remote monitoring technology, technical personnel can fastly collect the data from remote place in time. In order to maintain the normal operation of the equipment and reduce cost efficiency, they need not go to remote place which is in bad environment in person to monitor and control the state and various parameters of it. However, there are still some problems with monitoring system which has experienced the process from the single machine monitoring to the current network monitoring. For example, if there are lots of endpoints of data acquisition, these will greatly increase the complexity of the programming and they can not meet the needs for network communication because of having no more advanced technology. What’s more, much of remote monitoring system architecture is very complex and they coexist in the network communication system, which is required to integrate different network platforms to realize mutual communication. It is difficult to solve these problems by the traditional methods. Therefore, how to achieve the remote monitoring function economically and efficiently is the new issue that we have to face with. This paper puts forward a wireless remote monitoring system based on wireless communication technology in short distance named ZigBee and the mobile communication technology in long distance called GPRS, combining their characteristics and advantages. It has broken through the regional scope and changed the network mode of the traditional remote monitoring system with the way of combining the techniques of ZigBee and GPRS to construct wireless remote monitoring network, which can also achieve good monitoring results.According to the current situation and existing problems for the remote monitoring system, this paper firstly introduces the development of it and puts forward the main research contents about it. Secondly, wireless networking technology about ZigBee is discussed in detail, including the basic concept of ZigBee technology, network configuration, network mode, the structure of protocol stack and its software development platform. It’s the best choice to adopt ZigBee technology to acquire data within a small range, because ZigBee technology has the capacity of ad hoc networks in a small area. But we still need the help of GPRS technology to transmit the collected data to the monitoring center over a long distance. So this article is to discuss the GPRS technology, including the structure of GPRS network, the model of transfer protocol, the principle and the terminal protocols, etc. And then themethod of the remote monitoring system for street lights is to be designed and validated. Themain content includes the introduction for the whole structure of the system, ZigBee networknode, the hardware and sotfware design and implementation for GPRS transmission module,software design for the monitoring center and the debugging and verification for the wholesystem. At last, work summary for this paper and the prospect for future work are given.
