With the dramatic development of Internet technology, there are more and more multiple network standards emerged in the world. Meanwhile, the communication products have been updated continuously with the synchronization to the multiple network standards. As one of the numerous types of network standard, the Gigabit Ethernet network develops very fast and is used widely in modern communication networks, which makes the fast development of Gigabit Ethernet equipments and products with the evolution, renovation and development of Ethernet technologies.However, there is a phenomenon that Ethernet testing instruments are very scarce and expensive, and they can’t be bought in civil country in the process of researches and maintainability of Ethernet network equipments and products. Consequently, there is a fierce requirement of a new type of Ethernet testing instruments with full functions and easy operations in the market in case to lower the cost of researches and improve the efficiency of maintainability and debug.Aiming to satisfy the requisition described above, this paper firstly makqs the foundation of the later logic design by the way of studying the Ethernet protocols carefully. In the process of system design, the method of top-down is used to work out the logic design of all the sub-modules. Firstly, there is a logic requisition feature specification of all the modules concluded by that of studying the protocols defined by IEEE802.3and gathering the concrete requisition of the instruments provided by the users. Secondly, the detailed design schemes of all the sub-modules are finished and the RTL coding is also worked out. And then, in the process of EDA simulation, with the assurance of correction of all the sub-modules, the system verification is done using Verilog aiming to ensure the correction of data stream of the service to make it convenient to board level debug. Finally, it is processed synthesis and layouts in ISE12.1.In the process of system co-debugging, based on the developed hardware circuit of merging multiply data services and the GUI software designed to work with this instrument, this new type of Ethernet network instrument is tested. There are many indexes tested such as basic functions, the performances of the whole system and exchanges. With the testing results, it is shown that the Ethernet testing instrument designed fulfills all the requisitions provided by users and the functions defined by standard protocols. It makes the necessary assurances of lowering cost of researches and improving the efficiency of debugging and maintainability. Meanwhile, it also makes the experiential foundation of adding other testing functions of different service type to the instrument.
