SDH is widely applied to data transmission, can transmit high speed data, and hasgood transmission performance. In order to better conserve resources, how to utilizethe existing communication network platform to transmit the IP packet has become animportant subject in the field of data communications.By selecting the appropriate data link layer encapsulation protocol, Ethernet overSDH (EOS) technology achieved the frame mapping. High speed Ethernet data can betransmitted transparently in the SDH network. By using the techniques of EOS, thefusion between Ethernet and SDH came into reality. As one of the data encapsulationtechnologies, GFP protocol has a high efficiency, high security, low complexity offeatures, ideal for the use of the EOS.This paper analyzed the EOS background, introduced the SDH principle, VirtualConcatenation technology, Gigabit Ethernet technology and data encapsulationprotocols. Gigabit Ethernet over SDH (GEOS) was achieved by using FPGA. Thisdesign provided a specific, detailed structure of the various functional modules inFPGA, including simulation testing and hardware testing, reached the designrequirements.
