Coal is one of the main energy in our country, and conducting productions safely and effectively has always been the goal of coal industry to pursue. But due to the fact that most collieries are exploited underground in our country, the special working environment results the frequent occurrence of mine accidents. In order to realize the real-time positioning of mine workers, their distributions must have a more precise understanding. And it provides the most valuable information for the rescue work after the accident. So miners positioning system used in the coal industry has a very important practical significance.This article firstly makes a brief introduction to the wired and wireless systems in current mine, and compares the Zigbee technology with other systems in the costs, communication distance, data transmission rate and several aspects. The results show that Zigbee network positioning system's application works better than any other systems in underground mine. The core of the system is CC2430/CC2431which is made by Chipcon company, and the IEEE802.15.4protocal is the basic in positioning system researching underground mine.This paper has introduced the two types of localization algorithm, based on distance and distance has nothing to do with the positioning. After the analysis and comparison to them we decided to use RSSI algorithm which is based on the instructions of receiving signal strength. Then we introduced the establishment of IAR(a wireless sensor network simulation environment) and C51RF-CC2431-ZDK emulator, comprehensive test SPP software, SmartRF04Flash Programmer(the software of modifying physical address) and the function and step of the application-Packet Sniffer, a data analyzer. The performance of underground wireless sensor network that based on Zigbee technology is validated by Z-Location GUI positioning graphic monitoring software. Finally small debug system's PC interface which was conducted in lab is programmed.The self-organizability, randomly laid of the nodes and the characteristics of adapting to the environment of the wireless sensor network which is based on Zigbee is just to meet the application requirements of the mine monitoring system. The simulation results shows that the design of this technology based on Zigbee in coal mine positioning system can make the underground work personnel's real-time tracking, and the safety for personnel management will be more convenient and it has better practicability and popularize value.
