The nature condition of underground coal mine is complicated that potential security risk exist. In recent years, the situation of safety production continually improved because the state put more emphasis on mine safety production in China. However, the accident of coal mine safety still occurs , and killed more than 30 people in a particularly serious mine accidents, which is more than 10 times all over the country in 2008 . Coal production environment as a result of the special nature of the distribution of underground personnel can not be a true reflection of the rapid management system on the ground. In the normal production period, the statistics can not be easily down the number and distribution of staff; the event of an accident and can not quickly know the number of underground personnel, distribution and location, to the relief work difficult.This paper analysis of the wireless sensor network protocols and ZigBee network technology, and research the characteristics of ZigBee technology. Through several other wireless communication with a comprehensive comparison, from the conclusion point of view, it feasible to application in underground personnel positioning system and has many advantages, and design a underground personnel and equipment positioning system based on ZigBee technology. And also in order to achieve the position and attendance management, this system uses the gateway to communicate with PC on the ground or mobile monitoring equipment to monitor the location information and will be able to quickly implement the mine emergency rescue work and provide assistance in the accident.The system has realized fundamental functions of mobile node real-time positioning by TI's RF chips CC2430/2431 and Positioning PC Host Computer Software Z-Location Engine platform, and designed a ZigBee hand-hold monitoring devices based on ARM-9 technology, implanted in Windows CE 5.0 as an embedded operating system, using EVC tools for application development. The advanced monitoring and management system can meet the modern mining and intelligent enterprise information requirements and has the characteristic of low power consumption, high positioning accuracy and strong anti-interference ability.
