In 2008 the Ministry of Education issued the circular entitled"conducting the pilot project of providing Beijing Opera Lessons to students at primary and middle schools", which indicates the inclusion of Beijing Opera in music courses in the nine-year compulsory education. The project has caused heated discussion and has been questioned by many people. This paper mainly focuses on the process of conducting the pilot project and the confusion and problems that have appeared during the process. Then solutions will be discussed. This paper is based on a research conducted among the teachers, students and their parents in both in Beijing and Guangzhou, in an attempt to show that the entry of Beijing Opera into classes at primary and middle schools has played an important part in cultivating students'interest in traditional culture and art and in increasing their knowledge in this area, which will in turn improve their ability to appreciate art. Thus we should insist on carrying out this project. However, from the research result and feedback related to the implementation of the project, we can see that the lack of teachers and the imbalance of the teaching resources are the most important factors that have hindered the promotion of the project. Other factors should also be taken into consideration, such as whether the level of difficulty of the content is suitable for students'voice-related physical characteristics; whether the content of the play is suitable for the receptive ability of the learners of different ages. All these problems require further research to be done. Other problems should also be considered. For example: in those areas where local operas play a very important role, it needs to be further discussed whether Beijing Opera should be treated as the only type of opera to help promoting the traditional culture. This paper has thus suggested that the entry of Beijing Opera into classes at primary and secondary schools should be based on the full understanding of the purpose of the project, the multi teaching modes based on experiencing Beijing Opera and students'physical and psychological ability. It should also follow the teaching rules and be based on the good relationship between Beijing Opera and local operas. Hopefully in this way we can achieve the purpose of cultivating students'ability of comprehending diverse culture, thus inheriting and promoting excellent Chinese culture.
