Research On SNMP-Based Network Management And Fault Monitoring, And Their Implementation

With the development of computer network, network management plays an increasinglyimportant role. Good and effective network management can provide users with high quality ofservice. SNMP protocol as a de facto industry standard, can supply a good solution to networkmanagement in the face of complex and heterogeneous network problems. This paper used the simpleand easy scalability of SNMP protocol as the research and development basis of network managementsystem.This paper starts from the basic model of network management,and researchs on a networkmanagement system which has achieve the required functions. Using MIB library information SNMPprotocol provided,we can access and set network device information.We can find the connectionbetween the devices and their relationships by three and two layer topology discovery algorithm, andin accordance with step graph algorithm to determine the position of network icon in the window ofnetwork management system.Then based on the topology discovery,we implement other networkmanagement functions.This paper focuses on getting the two functions of fault management andperformance management.We combine the advantages of active polling and asynchronous events tocollect fault data in fault management. By filtering and relateing the collected data,some eventsseriously affected the network would be processed by the alarm processing module.In practice,netwo-rk management system will produce a large number of interrelated alarm.To address this issue,thispaper proposes the use of association rules to deal with the correlation between the alarm. the severalrelated alarm will be associated to reduce the number of alarm.In traffic monitoring, we solve thepromble of the unaccurated flow calculation caused by improper statistical method.Finally, theprogram also provides Valuable analysis report for administrators to analyze the performance ofnetwork.The system was developed and tested using VC6.0.It collected and processed the data of networkeffectively,then monitored and managed multiple network devices.It also haved achieved very goodresults in practice.
