Manufacturing Execution System is Management Information Systems that reside on the plant floor between the planning systems in offices and direct industrial controls in the production manufacturing management process, which provides real-time information about the product planning, product tracing and resource allocation for the plant floor managers. MES is a bridge that spans and fills up the gap between the planning systems and direct industrial controls, which has been the mainstream technology on the product management and the plant floor control.Research and applications of MES are still in the beginning in China, which have made rapid and great progress abroad. Under the background of applications in an engine factory, the paper has made scientific research from six aspects of MES as follows.(1)In the 1st chapter, it simply introduces manufacturing execution system, enables the readers to have a simple knowledge of MES, and illustrates the research background and content of the thesis. Firstly it introduces the importance of informationization to an enterprise and MES is the key for the informationization of a manufacturing enterprise. And then it indicates the definition of MES that AMR (Advanced Manufacturing Research) defined, which describes status of MES in the enterprise systems.It also analyses the current condition of MES in and out abroard.Finally, it introduces the research contens and the architecture of the thesis.(2) In the 2nd chaper, the paper summarizes the manufacturing execution systems. Firstly, it introduces the origin,development of MES and point out its connotation.And then it indicated the orientation model of MES, which analyses the affinity between the MES and the other management systems of enterprise.Then it introduces the function model of MES which concludes eleven primary modules, including: attemptering of working proceduring, resource distributing and state management, distributing of production cell, process management, management of the manpower resource, maintenance management, quality management, document controls, product tracing and BOM magagement,capability analyzing and data collection.Finally, it introduces its characteristic of industry applications.(3)In the 3rd chapter, the paper mainly discusses the architecture of MES. Firstly it promotes the methodology for design of software systems architecture. Secondly, it introduces the four basic cooperation computing architecture. Thirdly, it simply introduce the architecture based on three-layer C/S structure which includes expressing layer, business logic layer and data-storaging layer.And then, it introduces the architecture based on B/S, which is made up with user interface, service layer, applications server and data server layer.Finally, it simply evaluates the architecture, believe that it's better to use a combined model of C/S and B/S in a large information systems.(4)In the 4th chapter, the paper mainly introduces integration mode of MES and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning).Fistly it points out the benefits of integration. Secondly,it analyses the infomation transfer between them.And then,it introduces three integration modes which include integration mode of encapsulation and transfer,indirect integration mode, ditect integration mode.In the applications instance of this paper,it selets the indirect integration mode and implements it with middle database.(5)In the 5th chapter, it is an application instance. According to the background and goal of enterprise, it analyzes the actual demand, adopts the C/S three-layer structure, designs the structure of software systems and concludes the function modules.It also selct the appropriate integration mode between MES and ERP, and it has acquired a good effect.In the 6th chapter, all of the works in this thesis are summed up, and their futures are prospected.
