With the rapid growth of wireless communication technology, Ultra Wide-Band technology has attracted more and more attentions. In order to provide more convenience to the consumers, the research and implementation of radio frequency (RF) integrated circuit for UWB wireless communication systems became a new focus of the development on wireless communication systems. As the most important block in the wireless RF transceiver, frequency synthesizer can provide clean, stable and programmable local oscillator (LO) signals to RF tranceivers or clock signals to digital circuits. And its performances will determine the whole performances of wireless communication system. In this thesis, the design and implementation of quadrature Fractional-N frequency synthesizer for Impulse Radio Ultra Wide-Band (IR-UWB) wireless communication system are studied.First, this thesis describes the structure and principle of frequency synthesizer, then introduces the performance standards and design challenges of frequency synthesizer.Second, design methods on system level of frequency syntheizser are studied. A proper structure of quadrature Fractional-N frequency synthesizer is selected for IR-UWB wireless communication system. And based on the linear phase-domain model of frequency synthesizer, design flow for loop parameters are studied, and several methods for system-level simulations are introduced for verifications. Then, loop parameters for the frequency synthesizer in IR-UWB wireless communication system are calculated and verified.Third, Fractional-N frequency divider is designed for the frequency synthesizer in IR-UWB wireless communication system. And several chips is designed and implemented in 0.18um CMOS process. Measurement results shows that the performance of these chips meet the theoretic analysis very well.At last, circuits design of the quadrature Fractional-N frequency synthesizer for IR-UWB wireless communicatin system are studied, and a whole frequency synthesizer, which has been designed and implemented in 0.18um CMOS process, is measured.
