With the rapid development of wireless communication protocols, the co-existence of different protocols becomes inevitable. The protocols require different input signal frequency, bandwidth, and dynamic range. So the ADCs have different resolutions. In this paper, the requirements of the ADC performance for the multi-standard wireless terminals are discussed firstly. Then the advantages and disadvantages of the existing various ADC are analysed and compared. Combining with the latest achievements of the research and design of the pipelined ADC, an improved reconfigurable pipelined ADC is proposed. It is based on the traditional pipelined ADC, noticing that the parameters of the pipelined stages can be scaled down stage by stage. So the proposed reconfigurable pipeline ADC powers off the previous stages in low resolution modes to realize reconfiguration so as to meets the acquirement of multi-standard wireless terminals.Various circuit non-idealities are modeled in Matlab/Simulink to evaluate the performance of the proposed ADC. With the simulation of the non-ideas model, the impacts on the performance of the ADC of the non-idealities can be estimated. So the non-ideal model can be used to evaluate the performance of the ADC. Then the extra reconfigurable control switches' non- idealities are modeled with emphasis and simulation results show that non- idealities can be neglected if the aspects of the MOS switches chosen appropriately. In this condition, a novel reconfigurable control can be introduced to reduce much more power dissipation without deteriorating the ADC performance. The simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed pipeline ADC can achieve good performance in different modes to meet the needs of multi-standared wireless terminals application. And the power dissipation can be reduced by up to 55% at low resolution modes compared to the fixed resolution ADC, and by 15% compared to Stojcevski proposed reconfigurable pipeline ADC.
