Panel die is one of important technologic equipments in automotive body manufacturing. The design and manufacturing time and the quality of panel dies have direct effects on the development period, quality and competitive capability of new cars. The parts used in designing of automotive stamping die are usually serialized standard parts including guide-bush and guide-post etc or typical parts like upper die-set or lower die-set which have the same structural unit. Efficient design of these standard parts can reduce the repeated work, save design time, decrease the cost and improve the design and manufacturing of panel dies. So it is a feasible way to build parameterized standard part library for punching die on the general CAD platform.In this paper we analyzes the problems that the standard part library confronted in the design of automobile panel dies, presents status and trends of the research on CAD and KBE are discussed. To improve the efficiency of the standard library in die design, the Knowledge Engineering (KBE) was applied to the standard part library design,the supporting technology, the frame work, the constitution, the intelligent principle and the workflow of the system, and design an intelligent operation wizard system for the standard part library was studied.The knowledge and the flow of design are concluded according to the relevant experience of design of the single action drawing dies of automobile panel, then the acquirement of the knowledge is completed and the knowledge library is built. On the development platform of UG, the hybrid knowledge method, which was based on function method and combined with frame, rule and case, was established. The frame structure and the implementing process have been described. This system is an expert system especially for the automobile panel dies, which can guide and assist design engineers to perform the standard part. As a result, the system shortens the design cycle and enables the intelligent operation of standard part library.
