This paper is a part of the microwave measuring system researched by Microwave and Information Network Research Center. The primary purpose is to realize a S band frequency synthesizer with low phase noise and low cost.Frequency synthesizer is one of the key components in the high performance electronic system, and it is an important research field in communication technology.In this paper, the Phase-Locked-Loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer is studied. First, we review the fundamental concepts and basic parts of the PLL, and analyze the linear model and the noise characterize of the PLL. Then we review the design methods of a PLL synthesizer and the one constituted by charge pump PFD (phase and frequency detector ) and passive loop filter is focused. We simulate the design with the special software ADIsimPLL, the simulated data is provided. At last, we design the circuit depending on the simulated data and provide the control method of the PLL synthesizer.ADF4360-0 simplifies the design. And the real test results show that the hardware has good performances and can meet the requirements of the microwave measuring system.
