Electrocardiograph (ECG) monitoring is very important to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. At present, the cost of ECG monitoring networks is high, but the reliability and the security are poor. The developing of the wireless sensor networks (WSNs) brings a new approach for implementing ECG monitoring system, wireless ECG monitoring sensor networks, which can monitor in real time, transmit data quickly and accurately, and is low-cost.Routing protocol is a critical issue in research and application of wireless sensor networks. Nodes' limitations of communication, calculating, memory and especially energy bring lots of challenge to routing protocol design for WSNs. Recently, researchers have proposed many typical routing protocols. But there is no uniform standard or perfect solution for wireless ECG monitoring sensor networks. In this thesis, an energy-efficient routing protocol is proposed for wireless ECG monitoring sensor networks. The main contributions of the thesis are as follows:Firstly, according to the development of ECG monitoring networks, the structure of wireless ECG monitoring sensor networks is proposed. The relationship between energy consumption and routing is presented by analyzing the structure and technical difficulties of the WSNs.Secondly, in accordance with communication in wireless ECG monitoring sensor networks, mobile nodes transmit data through immobile nodes, and the routing protocol for immobile nodes is the improvement based on LEACH. The improved protocol can decrease nodes' energy consumption and proportion energy consumption of the whole network. So it can prolong the lifetime of the network. The simulation results show that the improved protocol is more energy-efficient and stable than LEACH.Thirdly, taking the practical applications into consideration, the format of data packet, communication address and communication frequency are defined. Then the routing protocol proposed in this thesis is implemented in sensor nodes and the experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Finally, the work in this thesis is briefly summarized and some future work is presented.
