Wireless sensor network(WSN) routing protocol is a research hotspot these days. Different from computer network, nodes in WSN are constrained with computation resources, memory and battery size. Thus, it is very hard to propose a general WSN routing protocol for various kind of applications. Therefore, researchers put up with many kinds of different WSN routing protocols to meet the requests of different scenarios. In this paper, according to the requirements of structure monitoring application, on the basis of previous studies, we proposed an energy-aware reliable hierarchical routing protocol(EARHRP) for WSN.We proposed a link estimation scheme to balance the energy consumption of nodes in network. Nodes can consume energy more evenly around the whole network, so the lifetime of the WSN can be prolonged. We also proposed an efficient method for downstream routing to make the WSN able to establish bidirectional communication. Moreover, an energy efficient hierarchical network structure is introduced to largely decrease the power consumption of nodes, so the WSN can well satisfy the requirement of long period monitoring of structure monitoring. Both software and hardware simulation for EARHRP are conducted. Software simulation undertakes using TOSSIM test bed while Hardware simulation is done on the WSN deployed on Rutai Bridge in Jiang Su Province. All simulations prove that EARHRP works better on structure monitoring compared with other multi-hop routing protocols. It consumes less energy and provides reliable bidirectional communication.
