In recent years, accidents often took place in coal mines. Therefore, there were great financial losses and many workers lost their life. And present security monitoring system applied in coal mines hasn't met the need of secure production. If the wireless sensor network is applied to monitor coal mines, secure production and efficient management will be promoted greatly in coal mines. Under the circumstances, related communication protocols of wireless sensor network are discussed in the paper.The wireless sensor network based on ZigBee is studied in the paper. And the typical application frame of coal mines'security monitoring system based on ZigBee is introduced. On the basis, the core of ZigBee network layer, namely ZigBee routing protocol is researched in detail. In the simulation platform of NS-2 which is run under Linux, some functions of ZigBee network layer are realized. And the protocol is simulated in different topologies. And the performances of the protocol are analyzed and researched in detail and profoundly by using gawk and gnuplot. It is turned out that ZigBee routing protocol is a protocol with higher delivery rate, lower delay and low cost. Therefore, the protocol can meet needs of security monitoring system under adverse circumstances such as coal mines.As we all know, ZigBee nodes'energy is limited.To use limited energy efficiently and prolong life-span of network, the mechanism of saving energy about ZigBee routing is studied. And routing schemes of saving energy are put forward. By simulation, it is turned out that the schemes can prolong life-span of network. This is helpful to guarantee real-time monitoring of coal mine'security monitoring system and deal with emergency in time.
