ZigBee is a short-distance wireless communication technology which is designed for low-rate wireless sensor networks. ZigBee networks have very broad applications in industrial control, intelligent home, and some other fields because of its high-efficiency and low-cost advantage. This paper includes the research and simulations on the ZigBee protocol, and provides an improved routing algorithm based on routing cost control. In the first part of this paper, after introducing the basic knowledge on the characteristic technologies and developing status of ZigBee networks, I explain the PHY layer and the MAC layer of IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee protocol as well as the device classification and network topology in NWK layer. Then this paper focuses on the buildup and the routing process of ZigBee network, and establishes a ZigBee simulation platform based on NS2 software. The ZigBee routing protocol shows its low-cost advantage in the simulation comparing to another ad-hoc routing protocol DSDV. Finally, this paper provides an optimized routing protocol which decrease the broadcast radius of the RREQ package. The simulation result indicates that the optimized routing protocol decrease the RREQ redundancy and cut down the cost of the routing in the entire ZigBee network.
