Environment Consciousness Evolution Of The Public Of China From The Perspective Of International Communication

Environment protection has gained much attention by the society because of the environmental deterioration. The government, enterprises, public and media have paid more and more focus on environment news. Environment issues present themselves and get worse due to industrialization, which first appeared in the West and then in China with the economic development of China. How to burden the great development press with fragility of ecosystem of China in a sustainable development way and how to realize the win-win of ecosystem and economy have become the central guidelines of current development of China.The government, enterprises, media and public have formed a relatively integrate ecosystem. Essentially speaking, the power of public is the main for environment protection, where the degree of environment consciousness of public determines whether the environment protection methods can be carried out efficiently. In the interactive ecosystem, the media has plays a positive role to foster the environment consciousness of public. The environment consciousness of media reflects and leads that of public from the functionality of mass media.As the sampling object, the environment news features of People's Daily Overseas Edition are studied by a quantitative method based on content analysis. The conclusion that the environment consciousness of public evolves in both macroscopical and microcosmic aspects has been drawn. Suggestions are presented to improve the environment consciousness of public as well.The contributions of this thesis propose a new research perspective in two evolving directions of environment news features of People's Daily Overseas Edition and the environment consciousness of public, which shows its significance both in theory and practice:1. It is the first time that the research method integrating environment news and international communication is presented. After analyzing the influence of international communication, environment news features of People's Daily Overseas Edition have provide the international communication work with direct references in theory, as well as the development of environment news of China with references in practice.2. It's concluded in the first time that the environment consciousness of the public of China is analyzed in two aspects of macroscopical 'awareness' and microcosmic 'action', which provides theoretic foundation of the environment consciousness of the public of China.The thesis is organized as follows. Section one depicts the history of environment consciousness of China.Section two lists the basic concepts of environment news and the development processes of environment news in China.Three aspects are included in Section three. Firstly, the concepts, development stages and the status of international communication of China are described. Secondly, the sampling data about environment news of twenty years of People's Daily Overseas Edition from 1986 to 2006 has been analyzed. Eight aspects, i.e. reporting gross, picture & text reporting amount, reporting types of literature, reporting spaces, domestic & aboard news reporting amount, domestic news reporting places, reporting contents and reporting angles, are quantitatively studied. Thirdly, environment news features of People's Daily Overseas Edition are analyzed from the influence of international communication and internal communication respectively, and the common features are shown out.The evolution of environment consciousness of the public of China is elaborated in two angles in Section 4. On the one hand, macroscopically speaking, environment consciousness of the public went through from the 'aqua' to the 'bottle green', i.e. from little environment consciousness to strong environment consciousness. On the other hand, microcosmically speaking, environment consciousness of the public was first recognized by the government, then the pioneers, and last the whole society in the evolution.Section 5 proposes three ways to promote environment consciousness of the public of China. The first is that as the organizer, the government takes good advantages in the plan as a whole to carry through the environment education. The second is to reform the enterprises and seek the coordinate ways between environment consciousness and market profits. The third is that media should take its more and more important responsibility.
