Digital images have been used widely in modern society. Because of the huge size of the raw image format, the compression technology of the digital image has become the core of the application. Till now, JPEG compression standard is more widely used since it's released in 1992.However, now people are not satisfied with JPEG any more. So the organization JPEG make out the JPEG2000 compression standard of digital image.There are many ways to implement JPEG2000 image encoding system. Some systems are based on FPGA, some are based on DSP, and some are based on application specific compressing chip. In order to implement the system based on FPGA or DSP, we have to not only make efforts to comprehend the JPEG2000 compression standard, principle and work modes of FPGA or DSP, but also spend a lot of time in optimizing software. Whereas the implementation based on application specific compressing chip which is based on reliable technology is easy to compete. ADV202 is a single-chip JEPG2000 compression and decompression solution of Analog Devices, Inc.In this research, the JPEG2000 image encoding system is designed and implemented based on ADV202.The system could transform the PAL format Standard Definition video signal into JPEG2000 code steam. Then image code steam can be sent to the PC. Because there are few researches on ADV202, this thesis describes the hardware circuit design and the software design of the system in detail, in order to provide the reference for the general development personnel.In addition, this paper offers a scheme of MJPEG2000 encoding system, and introduces simply the JPEG2000 decoding system for SDTV and encoding /decoding system for HDTV.The result of experimentation proved that the image encoding system was good. This system featured the flexile structure and can use the host software to configure conveniently JPEG2000 code parameters. The system supports both 9/7 and 5/3 wavelet transforms with up to 6 levels of transform, lossless and loss compression modes, several options for performing the rate-control algorithm and progression styles. This system could satisfy the request of different application.
