With the step of human being going into interspace period from information age, the technique of Remote Sensing(RS), which reflects many currently research results of lots of fields such as interspace technique, electronics, optics, computer and communication science and even exact mechanics, thrives quickly and has become one of the most important components of high technology. RS technique was used in many different fields which involve globe resource management, environment supervising and military reconnaissance. However, it also brings the problem of over growth of RS data, which bring forward the new requirement for storagement and transmission speed of these data. Thus to compress the RS data efficiently has been becoming more and more important.Because the RS image has the features of high resolution, large amount of information, low redundancy etc., the traditional compression method such as JPEG or DPCM has their own disadvantages and can not get the outstanding result. The establishment of JPEG2000 compression standard brings a new method to solve this problem. The characteristics of JPEG2000 could satisfy the requests of the compression of RS image well, so it is necessary to do the research of JPEG2000. But on the other hand, when take the hardware design under consideration, another very important aspect, which should be thinked about, is the speed of compression. The wonderful compression result of JPEG2000 also means that it should take more time to get it, compared with JPEG or the other old compression techniques. Therefore, how to design a real-time hardware system to get the aim of compressing the RS image with JPEG2000 is very important and has its own meaning. And that is what this paper mainly works on.Firstly,the basic coding system of JPEG2000 is thoroughly researched, and its fundamental compression principle is also discussed. Then the introduction of JPEG2000 elements and achieving methods are given detailedly step by step. After summarized the characteristics of the RS image and its compression requirements, the advantages of JPEG2000 are analysed. These studies provide necessary theory basis for the application. Secondly, for the requirements of on-satellite compression system and the features of RS image, this paper provide a scheme of hardware and software design, which uses ADV202 as the main arithmetic chip, DSP and FPGA as the main control chips with the idea of design as block. Based on its stability, the system gets the high processing speed, and for emulational necessary, the USB interface is also designed. This RS image compress system achieves the purpose of compressing the RS image with JPEG2000 stably and efficiently.Finally, to aim at the problems: the big noise during the transmission of JPEG2000 codestream and the blocks in the decode image in some case. The post- processes for codestream and decode image are provided. The post-process of codestream enhances the capability of JPEG2000 codestream against the noise with the method of unequal error Protection, while the post-process of decode image improves its vision effect using the method of wavelet soft threshold. These two post-process mothod perfect the RS image compression system.The RS image compression system designed in the issue could compress RS image with JPEG2000 compression standard and get the good result and high process speed. Through the post-process of codestream of JPEG2000, enhances its capability of anti-jamming and to insures to get the better decode image at decoder. And Through the post-process of decoded image, improves the vision quality of the image. The result proves that both of the hardware system and post-process arithmetic fit for the requests of RS image compression, and get the good compression and process result.
