JPEG2000, the successor of JPEG standard, was also produced by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) in December of 2000. JPEG2000 adopted the multi-resolution encoding methods with discrete wavelet transform(DWT) as the main method, having many good new characteristics. Currently, many image processing software based on JPEG2000 had already be released, the research in the hardware aspect also was under way. The ADV202 was a single-chip JPEG2000 compression and decompression solution for SDTV and HDTV of Analog Devices, Inc.First, the JPEG2000 standard was introduced as a whole, including the background, constitution, characteristics, framework and the key technology. Second, the features and theory of operation of ADV202 were described. Patented SURF (spatial ultraefficient recursive filtering) technology enabled low power and low cost wavelet base compression. It supported both 9/7 and 5/3 wavelet transforms with up to 6 levels of transform. Video interface directly supported various video formats such as ITU.R-BT656. Then the JPEG2000 video encoding system based on ADV202 was designed, in which TMS320VC33 was the main control chip. It could transform the PAL format Standard Definition video signal from television or camcorder into JPEG2000 video code stream, and then the stream was sent to the channel by the serial-port of TMS320VC33.The result of experimentation indicated that the video encoding system was good. It could compress the Standard Definition video signal into the code stream of j2c format. The velocity of the code stream was adjustable, and it could satisfy the request of different transmission rate.
