In the era of Internet, the increasing of electronic resources brings us rich information and it also makes information retrievals and usages more difficult. Therefore, it becomes the core task of one library to foster information literacy of users. The education of information literacy has developed from lectures, trainings, courses to online education, that is to say, Online Information Literacy Education. Nowadays, the topic of online information literacy education has brought more and more attentions of researchers, and it has become an important question for discussion.This research ,established in libraries of universities and colleges and based on online education, discusses the definition, causes of producing, characteristics and others aspects of online information literacy education. Therefore, this paper has its value in theory. By network investigation on the statuses of online information literacy education in libraries of American and Chinese universities and colleges and by questionnaire investigation on the statuses of students' online information literacy education in Si Chuan University, the author try to find the problems of online information literacy education existing in libraries of Chinese universities and colleges, then search some corresponding measures to solve this problems. From this point of view, this article has value of practice.There are eight sections in this thesis. In section one, it presents the research question and methods of this paper. In section two, it explains the definition of information literacy and information literacy education, and summarizes the situations and developing trends of information literacy education inside and outside of china. In section three, it analyses the definition, producing reasons, development, characteristics and other aspects of online information literacy education. In section four and five, the author makes network investigations on online information literacy in libraries of American and Chinese universities and colleges, and analyses the results from the angles of the form,content,mediate,organization,online guide,online courses. In section six, the author make a comparative analysis of online information literacy education between American and Chinese universities and colleges. In section seven, it describes a questionnaire investigation on students' online information education of Si Chuan University. In section eight, the author discusses some problems existing in online information literacy education in libraries of Chinese universities and colleges and some suggestions to solve them has been made.
