| In recent years, light show landscape projects emerge in an endless stream in major cities in China.Urban light show has become an important means of publicity and display, which has profoundly changed the urban public cultural space. This paper focuses on the urban light show space and takes Qianjiang New Town light show space as a case study from the perspective of space media. This paper adopts qualitative research methods of case study, participatory observation, text analysis and in-depth interview to explain the significance of this light show space as a medium.By analyzing the characteristics of the space, cultural practices in the space and participant experience, this paper explores the emerging spatial communication phenomenon in the context of digital media era.At the same time, this paper has an insight into the common characteristics and existing problems of urban light show space under the current technological environment, and re-examines the relationship between media, society and people.Digital media technology has deeply influenced the real space media. In the light show space of Qianjiang New Town, the "audio-visual show" with strong sensory stimulation surrounds participants like air, creating a huge visual structure. Each medium in this space enhances its control over the space, and the "space and time fantasy" constructed by them brings artistic and aesthetic enjoyment. The key to the uniqueness of such Spaces is that they create a collective way of viewing cultural events and bring people together in the space with a very contemporary audio-visual effect.People are participating in a digital urban event. The power of technology underpins the space to create liquidity. At the level of imaginary space, digital media technology also improves the imagination of space.Reports composed of sound, image, text and video outline the geographical space, providing opportunities for people to insight into the city through the landscape combining the virtual and the real. Therefore, the physical space and virtual space under the effect of digital media technology construct a "third space" containing social life. This space has the characteristics of a "prosperous city",establishing a new communication area in daily life and weaving rich social relations. This kind of fusion of virtual and reality also brings the potential of publicity to the space. From the perspective of space and communication, the paper considers the space of urban light show as a space medium and re-examines the meaning of communication.Taking the light show space of Qianjiang New Town as an example, this space media promotes interpersonal communication and social integration. It plays the role of "education and propaganda" through numerous current affairs themes, embedded in people’s lives in a daily way,and contributed to the formation of "family, country and unity" in the Chinese context. The unified and public audio-visual landscape dispels the differences of different participants in the private field and "drags" them into the immersive scene, which is conducive to establish a cultural community. This has become a universal and important function of the current urban light show space. This integration is also reflected in the spatial practice of participants, who engage in public communication through sightseeing, wandering, walking, watching, interaction, imagination, consumption, etc.,and form a collective memory of Hangzhou at a specific moment and identity. This kind of spatial communication has obvious localization characteristics and shapes the current urban cultural scene and social landscape. However, the space typical of Qianjiang New Town’s light show space also has risks.Commercial forces frequently appear in this space. It plans specific cultural scenes through carefully selected content, and the consumption practice in the space also "commodifies" urban culture.Disney, coffee advertising and so on actually construct the impression of the city with postmodern cultural characteristics, they construct a sense of contemporary, but the frequent appearance of capital also makes participants have a sense of exclusion and separation. The spectacular space transmission makes this space have the characteristics of modeling and symbolization, which is also the problem existing in many other cities’ light show space. But this space contains a variety of dynamic power struggles. In the local context, this space still has strong, political control and order rules, and power regulates the behavior of the participants. |
