With the continuous emergence of "phenomenal" cultural programs, audiences are more eager for the return of spiritual culture, pay more attention to the richness of the spiritual world, and pay more attention to and love the excellent traditional Chinese culture.Chinese culture has become a solid foundation and inexhaustible driving force for the high-quality development of cultural programs. As an important part of cultural programs, documentary has become the main position of inheriting Chinese traditional excellent culture and undertakes the important task of constructing cultural memory. This paper will adopt the literature research method and case study method, select the historical and cultural documentary Forbidden City as the research object, combine the cultural memory theory of Assman and his wife to make an in-depth analysis of the cultural memory construction of the Forbidden City itself and the 600 years of Ming and Qing history in the documentary Forbidden City, and explore the motivation of the cultural memory construction of Forbidden City and its significance of existence. The research shows that the factors promoting the construction of cultural memory of the documentary Forbidden City can be divided into external factors and internal factors. There are not only the external push of national policies and the emotional needs of the audience, but also the mainstream narrative logic inherent in the documentary to promote the cultural memory to be transmitted to the audience in a more vivid form.At the same time, cultural symbol carriers with symbolic significance are presented in a younger, digital form, providing more stable and lasting support for the continuation of cultural memory. The memory space combined with virtual and real in the documentary Forbidden City also provides an external storage for cultural memory, allowing the audience to continuously acquire and construct cultural memory in the documentary’s "memory field".To some extent, the documentary Forbidden City takes traditional culture as the carrier, which conforms to the mass culture and mainstream values. The film converts obscure or shelved stored memory into functional memory, broadening the depth and breadth of audience’s cognition of cultural memory. At the same time, while enjoying the audio-visual feast, the audience can enhance their cultural confidence, arouse emotional resonance, and strengthen their sense of identity and belonging.
