Intangible cultural heritage is a valuable treasure created by our country during its long social development. It is the crystallization of the creativity and imagination of the Chinese people and preserves the precious memory of the traditional culture of each ethnic group, which is of great significance for the survival and development of our country.Because of its visualization, authenticity and spatio-temporal composite, the documentary film has become an important carrier for recording the memory of NRM and spreading NRM culture, and has a significant role in shaping collective memory and constructing social identity. This paper explores the content construction, image presentation and identity shaping of documentary films on cultural memory by taking the documentary films broadcasted by the Central Documentary Channel as the research object and using the relevant memory theories as the support. In addition to the introduction, this paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter illustrates the effective construction of memory in documentaries on three levels: memory clusters in the material dimension, mnemonics in the symbolic dimension, and memory practices in the functional dimension. The second chapter analyzes the visual, auditory, and narrative dimensions of documentary films in terms of their visual representation of memory. The third chapter focuses on the identity theory and communication theory to explore the memory identity formed by documentaries on the basis of constructing memory fields.Firstly, the thesis argues that the documentary film constructs culture through three dimensions: in the material dimension, the documentary film focuses on the tangible objects of reality, making them an important medium for memory practice by the rememberers;in the symbolic dimension, the memory field shown in the documentary film contains the collective common code of conduct and values, which has a powerful symbolic energy. In the functional dimension, the documentary promotes the creative release of memory through the function of memory transmission and memory shaping;secondly, the documentary uses various video art creation techniques to turn many memories that originally belonged to individuals into public memories that belong to the public, providing viewers with a modern media memory field full of interaction. In terms of narrative, the documentary’s memory narrative is constructed through a combination of suspense and conflict narrative, micro and macro narrative techniques, and montage narrative techniques. Finally,in terms of effect, the documentary film of NRMs moves from the transmission and sharing of memory to the internalization and identification of memory, which contains three connotations of identity:artisanal spirit, national emotion and cultural identity of the new era.As a carrier of cultural memory, the documentary video stimulates the viewers’ collective knowledge of the memory of NRMs through an intrinsic historical reconstruction mode, prompting them to form attachment and identity with the country and nation.
