Documentary literature is based on real people and real events in history. The study of Westerners’ documentary literature about Chinese culture and history is helpful for us to re-understand and disseminate our own culture. The first section of the series of cultural travels,China in the Eyes of Westerners, was written by four foreign writers who came to China in the late 19 th century to the beginning of the 20 st century. They objectively describe Chinese culture, customs and people’s feelings at that time. This thesis mainly studies the following issues: 1.The reasons and subject for the translation of such documentary literature in the new era;2.The English works about China written by Westerners have become a kind of memory,so the translator need to reproduce the cultural memory when translating such documentary literature works;3.The role of the reproduction of cultural memory in our current translation studies, strengthening the formation of Chinese cultural memory and translation practice.Based on the questions above, this thesis analyzes the translation and introduction of documentary literature on Chinese themes from 2000 to 2018 and the influence of the mainstream ideology.Taking this series of books as an example, this thesis analyzes the translation of place, people, address term, customs and culture-loaded words in the text from the perspective of cultural memory theory. It is recognized that they are the embodiment of Chinese cultural memory and participate in the reconstruction and construction of the collective cultural memory of China. The reproduction and construction of collective cultural memory is beneficial to strengthen the formation of Chinese cultural memory, helps translators establish the spirit of cultural consciousness and self-confidence,and urges translators to improve their translation literacy so as to tell Chinese stories well and truly realize the going out of the Chinese culture.
