A Study On Strategies For English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpreting Of Sports Commentary Under The Interpretive Theory

In the field of sports event broadcasting,sports commentary is an important medium for transmitting event information to the audience.Qualified sports commentary is professional and rhythmic,and can help the audience interpret game information in real time.In China’s international sports broadcasting programs,simultaneous interpreting of sports commentary has already become an indispensable part,and its quality will directly affect the broadcasting effect of sports events.In view of the features of simultaneous interpreting of sports commentary,such as complex terminology,unpredictability,unfavorable working environment,uneven source text information quality,and diverse audience needs,it is essential to adopt appropriate strategies to ensure the quality of interpretation.The Interpretive Theory holds that interpreting is a communicative activity that focuses on achieving sense equivalence instead of word correspondence.Due to the urgent working time and great pressure of simultaneous interpreting of sports commentary,interpreters should not stick to the language form of the original language for verbatim interpretation,but pay attention to the extraction of meaning,which is consistent with the view of "deverbalization" emphasized by the interpretive theory.Therefore,the interpretive theory is of great guiding significance to the selection of simultaneous interpreting strategies for sports commentaries.This thesis briefly introduces the development of the Interpretive Theory and simultaneous interpreting of sports commentary.Based on previous research,the author finds that although the Interpretive Theory has been widely applied in various interpreting activities,its application in the field of sports commentary can rarely be found.At the same time,the author also found that most of the current researches on simultaneous interpreting of sports commentary by domestic and foreign scholars are mainly discussing training methods of interpreters and the importance of preparation works,and have not proposed specific strategies according to the challenges it poses.Guided by the Interpretive Theory,this thesis analyzes the language material of the 2022 Women’s Basketball World Cup final of CCTV-5,and summarizes the effective strategies adopted by CCTV-5 interpreter to deal with the challenges of simultaneous interpreting of sports commentary in the three stages of comprehension,deverbalization,and reformulation.Based on the analysis of the above case,the author concludes that interpreters need to accurately prioritize information during the stage of comprehension,and use omission,generalization,and anticipation strategies to address the challenges of fast speaking and strong professionalism in the source text;At the stage of deverbalization,interpreters need to adopt strategies of reconstruction and explanation to deal with syntactic differences between English and Chinese and broken expressions;In the stage of reformulation,in order to cope with the long gaps between the utterances of the commentator,interpreters need to utilize the screen information as guidance and switch his role in a timely manner.In order to faithfully reflect the emotional expression of the commentator,the interpreter adopts an imitation strategy to align his own language style and intonation with the commentator.Through this study,the author hopes to broaden research horizon and perspective for sports commentary simultaneous interpreting,a special and difficult interpretation activity,and provide guidance to candidate interpreters and professional interpreters to improve their proficiency and capability to deal with simultaneous interpreting of sports commentary and other simultaneous interpretation activities with the same or similar difficulties.
