Strategies For Handling Noise In Simultaneous Interpreting For Sports Event Commentary

This report is based on the simulated simultaneous interpretation of the live commentary of the final of the 2022 YONEX Badminton French Open,with a focus on analyzing the noise problems generated during the commentary process and summarizing the corresponding interpreting strategies.Sports event commentary is characterized by strong colloquial features and involves a plethora of sports-specific jargon.The live event environment is relatively noisy,which leads to the generation of a substantial amount of noise.The noise in this sports event commentary can be categorized into three types: semantic noise,physical noise,and cultural noise.Semantic noise includes noise caused by redundancy and noise caused by simplification;physical noise includes noise caused by on-site audience,noise caused by referees,and noise caused by audio-visual asynchrony;cultural noise includes noise caused by specialized terms and noise caused by cultural background.Based on different types of noise and case analysis,corresponding techniques and strategies have been summarized.For semantic noise,interpreters can use techniques such as omission and addition;for physical noise,interpreters can use techniques such as waiting,prediction,visual aids,and fuzzy processing;for cultural noise,interpreters can use techniques such as explanation,conversion,and summarization.By analyzing the noise problems in sports event interpretation and summarizing the “noise reduction” techniques,the interpreter hopes that this practice report will serve as a reference for future work in simultaneous interpreting in sports event commentary,as well as a reference for interpreters in other fields to deal with noise problems.
