City is a communication system that covers the exchange of goods, the movement of people, the exchange of information, the communication of people and the sharing of meaning. An ideal city is a "communicable city",and the significance of media-based city has been manifested unprecedentedly. As one of the most original and insitive thinkers in the 20 th century,Benjamin's research covers a wide range of fields. This paper mainly takes Benjamin's "Arcade Project" as the main research object, and analyzes Benjamin's idea of media-oriented city by using literature research method and comparative analysis method. The first chapter of this paper will introduce the discussion background, theoretical origin and methodology of "Arcade Project".Benjamin's thought was influenced by surrealism, historical materialism and commodity fetishism. In "The Arcade Project",Benjamin adopted the dialectical image,an important philosophical argumentative method,to reach its essence through the appearance of material. In the modern society, the ephemeral dialectical image needs to be captured by means of montage, and then the scattered contents are continuously transformed and recombined. The second chapter of this paper combines the theory of urban communication to analyze the spatial changes of the modern city of Paris in Benjamin's text at the end of19 th century and the beginning of 20 th century. The concept of media-based city points out that communication is not only a derivative function of the city, but a city exists as a medium. This is based on the fact that the city has the function of communicating between the private and public relations fields.Buildings in cities send messages to people.Busy streets, parks, even offices and factories can be said to be Spaces created for communication. Therefore,Benjamin's idea of mediumized city is reflected in his attention to the changes of urban space in the "Arcade Project",including the private living space, the Haussmann project that intends to unify the city into a space, and the arcade where private space and public space blend together. The urban space is also the main place where new social relations take place. Therefore, this series of spatial changes also produce new social relations and spatial practices. With the advance of Haussmann Project, the living space of the loafers is transferred from arcades to boulevards and finally resides in department stores. The media wonders created by arcades and world expos make the "use value" of commodities give way to the "ornamental value",and make art serve commodities; The lack of experience in modern society determines that "shock" experience has become a new way to perceive the city.Meanwhile,"shock" experience has also become a deep way for loiterers to perceive the urban spatial transformation of Paris. The third chapter is based on the current situation, with the development of technology, the virtual space has an unstoppable tendency to intervene in the urban space, and Benjamin's idea of media-based city has a new communication significance.Firstly, the expansion of loafers' loafing space. The anonymity of virtual space reborn loafers' revolutionary potential.Secondly, the form of live broadcasting with goods has shaped a new holy land of fetishism. The broadcast room provides an entertainment and recreational shopping environment, which gives a sense of entertainment to the consumption behavior in the digital age,and at the same time alienates consumers and turns them into commodities. Finally, short video shooting creates a kind of embodied experience that connects the virtual and the real. The shooting content and form of short video make up for the lack of individual narrative under the grand narrative, and has the revolutionary potential of expanding human experience memory.
