In recent years, with the accelerated process of urbanization, the competition between cities showing the trend from "economic competition" to "cultural competition". The city image is an important resource for a city, and have a far-reaching impact on the comprehensive development of the city, how to build and spread a city image that full of local characteristics to the audience become the key which the city manager have focused on.As a subjective impression of experience, city image are closely related to the audience’s awareness and emotion of the city. Urban sense of place is the main content of the soft power of culture which could imperceptibly influence people’s awareness of the city image, and to enhance the soft power of culture is the only way to build a good city image. As the main tools of spreading the city image, the media play an irreplaceable important role in shaping the audience’s perception of the city as well as identity, its mode and content of communication will ultimately affect the result.In this paper, the concept of the city image and sense of place will be firstly sorted out and summarized, and then analyzing the importance of using urban sense of place in city image building and communication follows. Take Nanning for example, using a questionnaire to analyze the relationship between urban sense of place and the city image on different group of the city.Secondly, the paper analyzes how the media carrier, manifestations, geographical factors perform and provide local experience to shape urban sense of place and thus enhance the urban identity and results of city image communication. Followed by the cases of city image on microblog that help to analyze the change and reconstruction of the urban sense of place in the new media environment.Finally, the paper discusses the way shaping the urban sense of place through time, space, media ritual, narrative strategies under the construction of discourse community, and then propose recommendations on city image building and dissemination.
