From the end of the 19 th century to the beginning of the 20 th century,China's newspaper industry developed very rapidly. At that time, there were no welldeveloped materials about the periodical press in China,so the Russian Sinologist Sergey Polevoy(1886—1971)created a concise characterization of Chinese newspapers published in the largest newspaper centers in China.By analyzing articles, editorials, telegrams, feuilletons from Chinese newspapers,Polevoy reveals the inner content of the newspapers. Also,Polevoy,in the form of a reference manual, lists the rules and laws of the Chinese press that were in force until 1912,and a list of 487 newspapers and magazines published in China and abroad. The work of Polevoy Periodicals In China was compiled before many subsequent works on the periodical press in China, but has generally been ignored by other researchers. This research examines the historical value of Polevoy's catalogue through comparison with other works about the periodical press of China in the 20 th century, that were written by R.Britton,R.L(?)wenthal and D.Patterson.The materials collected in Periodicals In China can serve as a reliable basis for studying the history of periodicals in China. |
