| Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward the Belt And Road initiative in the fall of 2013.So far,the Belt And Road initiative has produced impressive results.Despite the impressive achievements of the "Belt And Road" initiative,we cannot ignore the problems in the construction.Among them,the international community,including countries along the "Belt And Road" and some regional powers,has also doubted,resisted and even openly criticized the initiative,which is slightly different from the image reported by domestic media and the public reaction.Therefore,the research problem of this paper arises.So in this paper,from the perspective of news framing theory,selected 540 reports from the People's Daily APP and 53 from the Wall Street Journal on the initiative,has carried quantitative analysis of six angles,including quantity,length,genre,citation source,tendency and categories,and answered the research question:how do the mainstream media in the US and China set up the news reporting framework in the face of China's national development strategy--" Belt And Road" initiative?It is found that there are significant differences and similarities between the two media in the process of setting news frame.To be specific,the differences are as follows:1.In terms of the number of reports,the report density of People's Daily APP is much higher than that of the Wall Street Journal,2.In terms of the length of the reports,People's Daily App mainly uses short reports,which focus on a single news story or events related to the news theme without in-depth analysis.Therefore,the length of the articles is between 201-400 words.The Wall Street Journal,however,is dominated by long reports,which focus on starting from a simple news event,analyzing the political background behind the news event from the perspective of national ideology or economic theory by connecting with relevant news events.3.In terms of reporting genre,the People's Daily App focuses on news,by using of factual news to present the real and dynamic initiative,while the Wall Street Journal often uses commentaries to state the views with obvious emotional orientation,and even the hard news also include the views.This article speculates that the Wall Street Journal will do a better job of guiding public opinion about the initiative.4.In terms of emotional orientation,the People's Daily App shows positive support,while the Wall Street Journal shows neutral and negative attitude.In fact,the opposition of attitudes reflects the political stand and national interests represented by the two media.Similar perspectives include:1.There is no statistical difference in the identity attribute composition of news sources,and they all prefer to get news clues from the government and documents.2.The categories are related to political and economic news.This paper holds that the composition of source identity attributes and the categories of reporting influence each other.When reporters characterize a news event as political and economic news,they seek out government officials and documents containing economic data for interviews.On the other hand,as the initiative is an economic strategy proposed by the Chinese government,most related activities are officially held by the government.This attribute essentially determines the categories of relevant topics.Based on above,this article concludes the People's Daily AP uses cooperation framework to describe the initiative,emphasizes the initiative of motivation to realize win-win cooperation and build human destiny community while the Wall Street journal more inclined to use conflict framework by using "ambitious" and "challenge" and other words to describe a rising China,and " spree","binge" and other negative words to describe China's economic help.By comparing the initiative with NATO ally and military cooperation with Australia,this American media emphasizes the power competition between China and the United States,Russia. |
