Truth-Falsity's Battle:A Study On Report About Rumor-Refuting From People's Daily's Column “qiuzheng”

Now a huge social transformation is undergoing in China. Due to this reason, conflicts and contradictions are emerging. However, official information channel lacks transparency and unobstruction, which may cause rumor and impacts the public. As an official media platform, People's Daily set up the column “Qiuzheng” in 2011 for the sake of refuting rumors by professional investigations and authentic reports. This column is playing an important role in clarifying facts and has become an important information source for other media and the public.Now Column “Qiuzheng” has formed its unique style in its report content. When selecting topics, it mainly focuses on refuting those hotspot rumors on the Internet and media; meanwhile, it also takes efforts to dispel rumors and guide the public opinion with its professional investigations and independent analysis. Then try to use daily's Scientific periodicals to develop public's immunization.Rumor consists of several basic elements: complexity, intractability as well as speciality in some area. Hence, when reporting, “Qiuzheng” takes these elements into consideration and organizes different subjects to refute rumors. It not only employs traditional techniques such as persuasion and contradiction, but also tries to build up a equivalent dialogue mechanism between the column and its audience. Then, depending on the different initial modalities of Rumors, “Qiuzheng” takes various kinds of refuting methods such as providing evidence, negotiating or discussing which could be more acceptable for the public.Despite this column's achievements, there are still some disadvantages which need to be offset. For example, new media are not involved in rumor refuting actions together; or, Rumors cannot be eliminated thoroughly. Moreover, how to maintain public credibility is another issue. This dissertation will concentrate on analyzing the situation of “Qiuzheng” of which the dilemma can be regarded as an epitome of China's mainstream media rumor refuting reports. In the latter part this essay will try to provide specific solutions to these mentioned difficulties as references for media similar to the Column “Qiuzheng”.
