Research Of Tse-chien Tai's Library Science Thought

Tse-Chien Tai is a library scientist in China in the early.He is one of leaders of Chinese new library movement in 20 century.He made important contributions to the development of Chinese library business in practice and theory.After he changing work in the 30's,there was no message about him.So modern scholars can not learn about him and his thoughts of library science.This paper uses the historical method,the literature survey method and the comparative method.By reading Tai's writings,we can know his theoretical thoughts.By analyzing features of Tai's library science thoughts,we can study his core thought deeply and systematically.First of all,this paper summarizes studies about Tai's library science thoughts.And then,we comb his time and events and introduce his writings about library science.Tai's library science thoughts mainly about several aspect:(1)library's objective and functions;(2)six elements of library management;(3)library scientific management,including:library's construction environment,building,buying books,books' management,service thoughts,duties of chief librarian,organization framework,and so on;(4)education for librarians;(5)library professional societies,etc.We find that Tai's core thought is:library is a social educational institution what centers on “users' convenience” and has the function of entertainment.On the basis of the core thought,he came up with other thoughts,including library scientific management approach,“service” thought and “union”thought.And he suggested library pay attention to the education of librarian.In summery,Tai's library science thoughts is comprehensive,systematic,practical and forward-looking.It has the characteristic of western library science thoughts.Tai's thoughts have extremely great influence on the development of Tsinghua University library and Chinese library business.Based on the above research,we come up with enlightenment about Tai's library science thoughts for modern library field.
