The 20th Century Foreign Library Science In China: The Spread And Impact

Our modern Library Science began at the beginning of the twentieth century. From the history of its development in the whole twentieth century, we can draw such a conclusion: the propagation about foreign achievements by these persons visiting abroad and students abroad, the aids from the foreign specialists and the literature translation in Library Science contribute great to our Library Science and Library Cause. The three factors make the foreign thoughts about Library Science spread and accepted in China which had great effect in China. According to the stage of Chinese history and the three development climax of Library Science, I divided the course in which foreign achievements are spread and produce great effect into three phases, hat is from 1900 to 1949, from 1950 to the beginning of the Culture Revolution hi 1966, from 1966 to 2000. Then I analyze the background of the communication and the effects in order through these medium: persons visiting abroad and students abroad, foreign specialists and literature translation. From the above analyzing, I elucidated the importance of introducing and accepting foreign achievements and came to such conclusion:Firstly, communication between home and abroad has prompted our development greatly. So we must pay more attention to it and expand it in different ways so that we can obtain the advanced theory and technique from them. This is the main aim of importing. Secondly, we must have enough courage to import, pursuing bringing principle. Due to under-developed plight of our Library Science and Library Cause, we must introduce the advanced theory, the developed technique, the excellent management method etc. so as to catch up with the developed countries and then innovate. Thirdly we should have global insight. Because of the imbalance of the development in Library Science and Library Cause of the world, we should expand our eyeshot, choose the most advanced theory and the best technique to develop ourselves. We shouldn't refuse to accept the wealth which belongs to the whole world just because of the different ideology, different country nature and different developing phase. Otherwise, we can't grasp the present developing changes and thefuture trends of the subject. Fourthly, the international and civil peace environment is the premise to international communication. Without it, any communication will stop. The strong economy is the base for international communication. Without it, all things will suspend. The open policy is the guarantee to accept the best and keep synchronization with the world level.
