Objective The aim of the current study was to investigate the body height distribution profile,and prevalence of short stature of primary and secondary school students aged from 7 to 18 years in Hefei Anhui.So we can evaluate their growing development,help policy-making,find the possible causes of the disease,even help provide means for prevention and control of the disease.Methods We selected twelve schools in five districts and counties in Hefei and recruited 3593 primary and secondary school students whose ages ranged from 7 to 18 years.Body heights were measured accurately,and were evaluated by a nine cities’ growth standard.Short stature was defined as the height was two standard deviation(SD)below the mean height in each group.The prevalence of short stature was calculated and standardized by the same nine cities’ population data.Results 1、Body heights were higher in boys than that in girls.The body heights of boys nearly stopped increasing after 15 years old while the heights in girls stopped increasing after 14 years old.Boys of 7 to 9 years old were higher than their peers by 1.4~1.6cm(P<0.05),and the difference became larger at 13 to 18 years old by 4.2~13.1cm(P<0.001),while The body heights was no difference between boys and girls at 10 to 12 years old.Urban students were higher than rural students at the age of 7 to 11 and 15 to 16 by 2.7~4.9cm(P<0.05),while there was no difference between 12 to 14 and 17 to 18 year old students(P>0.05).2、The body heights of children in Hefei in 2014 were higher than that in 2010.Boys from 8 to 15,17 and 18 years old were higher than 2010 by 2.1~4.7cm,(P<0.001),Girls from 7 to 17 years old were higher than 2010 by 1.0~3.1cm(P<0.05);Urban students at the age of 7 to 16 in 2014 were higher than that in 2010 by1.3~4.0cm(P<0.05),and rural studentsat the age of 7 to 15,17 to 18 in 2014 were higher than that in 2010 by1.7~5.1cm(P<0.05).3、The total prevalence of short stature in Hefei was 2.26%.all age groups ranged from 1.12% to 4.17%;The prevalence of short stature in rural area was 3.43%;that in urban area was 1.76%;rate in urban area was significantly lower(χ2=9.793,P=0.002).The prevalence of short stature in boys was 2.60%;that in girls was 2.64%,there was no obvious difference between them(χ2=0.006,P=0.937).Th prevalence of short stature in primary school students and secondary school students was also no obviously different.Conclusions 1、Body heights were higher in boys than that in girls at the age of 7 to 9 and 13 to 18,while there was no difference from 10 to 12.Urban students were generally higher than students in rural area.Elementary school students from 7 to 11 years old in urban area were were higher than rural students by 3.3~4.9cm.The body heights of children in Hefei in 2014 were higher than that in 2010.2、The survey recruited 3593 primary and middle school students in Hefei,94 students were screened out as short stature,the prevalence was 2.62%,male short stature detection rate was 2.60%,female short stature detection rate was 2.64%,the rural short stature detection rate was 3.43%,detection rate of short stature in urban was 1.76%.the rate was significantly higher in rural area than the rate in urban area;There was no obvious difference of the prevalence of short stature between boys and girls.Neither was the primary and secondary school students.
