Mobile technology is gradually changing the way of healthcare, attributed to its advantage of retrieving data and knowledge anytime and anywhere. These years has seen mobile health’s fast development in China. Mobile health has two application situations:one is serving health providers such as doctors and nurses in the hospital, which aims at improving their work quality and efficiency; the other is serving consumers at home, which aims at improving the accessibility of healthcare service and information. As mobile health is a frontier field, there is a lack of empirical studies to evaluate the application impact and conclude common lessons to direct the future development of mobile health, which hindered healthy development of mobile health industry. This thesis first made a literature review on evaluation methods of mobile information systems, and then conduct system evaluation studies in two typical cases:one is mobile nursing information system for nurses in the hospital and the other is mobile chronic disease management system for patients at home. Detail contents are as follows:(1) Analyze and compare common information system evaluation methods, including interview, questionnaire, utility test, log analysis, and observational study. Analysis showed that interview was the basis of other evaluation methods and especially suitable for exploring system performance and impact at an early stage. Therefore, this thesis chose interview method to evaluate two typical cases.(2) Conduct an impact evaluation study of mobile nursing information system. This study chose a tertiary hospital in Beijing, China with rich experience in developing and adopting mobile nursing information systems, as research object. Interview study concluded that the major challenges for the system were limited interoperability with other hospital information systems and slow data transmission. System functions needed to develop from assisting nursing work to guiding nursing work with decision support.(3) Conduct a user-need evaluation study of mobile chronic disease management system. This study chose a tertiary hospital in Ningxia, China with rich experience in chronic disease management, as research object. Interview study concluded that the primary problems for clinicians included the lack of public health and preventive medicine, the lack of patient personal health record database, and the lack of clinical expert resources. Problems for patients included the lack of attention, knowledge, and adherence of chronic disease management, and the lack of trust in clinicians from basic hospitals. These findings had already directed the design of mobile chronic disease management system, and achieved good trial performance. This thesis explored the evaluation of mobile health information systems. It not only provided empirical suggestions to mobile health applications for clinicians and consumers, but also provided references to similar mobile health evaluation studies.
